­March is Reading Month!

Dear Parents/Guardians: 

March is fast approaching and before we know it, Reading Month will be upon us!!  Our theme this year is “All-American Diner - All You Can READ!” 

We are planning several activities during the month to encourage the life-long skill of reading at Fairview Elementary School. 

Dress up Thursdays’  - MARK YOUR CALENDAR  

     March 4th (Thursday)     -   Spirit Day - Wear our school colors
                                                 Maroon & Gold!
     March 11th (Thursday)    -   Readable T-Shirt or Crazy Hair Day or Crazy
                                                 Hat Day - Wear a readable or slogan shirt
                                                 or go crazy with a crazy, silly, wild hairdo,
                                                 or a crazy hat.
     March 18th (Thursday)    -  50’s Day  - Boys can wear blue jeans, white
                                                T-shirt, or a jean jacket, or a button-up shirt,
                                                 etc.  Girls can wear anything pink, anything
                                                 with a poodle on it, or polka dots, skirts,
                                                 bobbie socks, blue jeans, etc, Have fun!!!
     March 25th (Thursday)    -  Pajama Day - Wear PJs and/or robe and/or
                                                 slippers, plus bring your favorite throw or
                                                 pillow,  so we can cozy up with a good book! 

Dress up on the above days and the students will have their names put in for a drawing for participating.  There will be at least, two winners per class. 

Bring books back on time! - If a student brings back all of his/her books on time (before 9:00am) on Library Day from March 1st- March 25th, he/she will be entitled to a treat, plus a pencil & bookmark and to have their name put in for a drawing for prizes as a reward for being responsible. 

March 4th Pep Rally to start Reading Month off with a cheer.  The Varsity Cheerleaders will lead us in a cheer and the school song. Our Varsity Coaches and select players will talk with the students about the importance of reading at school and elsewhere. 

One-for-Books - March 10th students will be bringing home a ziplock bag with their name on them, in their Wednesday folder.   If students return their ziplock bag on or before March 19th with a dollar or loose change their name will be put in for a drawing for a poster.  There will be 10 posters given out plus one $5.00 gift certificates to use at the Book Fair.  The money raised from “One-for-Books” will buy books for our students. 

March 18th “GRAND DAY” – “Guest Readers” Local – “GRANDPARENTS” have been invited to read to each class and talk about why reading is important to them both personally and professionally.   Plus, on March 18th, students can invite someone “Grand” to lunch ($2.50 per grand) and then to the Book Fair.  More information will in be March 3rd Wednesday folder. 

All classes will have the opportunity to preview Book Fair books between March 10th   - March 16th, during their Library time.  The Book Fair will be held Thursday, March 18th 11:00am – 7:00pm; Thursday, March 25th 3:00 – 7:00pm; Friday, March 26th 3:00 – 7:00pm and Saturday, March 27th 5:00 – 7:00 pm 

On March 25th, all elementary students and staff will DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) at two different times during the morning.  Mr. Wilcoxen will come over the P.A. and make an announcement to DEAR. 

We have a full month of reading-related activities planned and we hope that they will encourage students to pick up a book and read.
